Over the past couple of years, there is a phrase I have heard repeatedly – fake it till you make it. Now, I know we have all heard that at some point in our lives, and we have probably applied it in a hundred different ways. But for this week’s Editors Note, I want to apply it in the world of fashion.
As we get older, our style naturally changes. We don’t dress the same as we did 5 years ago, and I am sure we will dress differently in the future. Yet….this is when fashion will become our own, and our personal style can truly emerge.
What does that mean?
For most, this will result in experimentation. And let’s be real. We have all found pictures and outfits on Pinterest that we have tried to replicate, even if it wouldn’t “normally” fit our style. This process is what makes fashion such a fun and exhilarating domain. It’s always changing and evolving.
For Example:
This is an outfit I recently discovered on Pinterest and simply put, I love it. Have I ever worn anything like this? No. Do I have similar articles of clothing in my closet? Yes. So why not put them together and see what happens. Remember: Fashion is all about trying new things and discovering what works and what doesn’t.
Most Important Element: Confidence
Fake it till you make it. Just as Kate Spade stated, we have never really stopped playing dress-up. Fashion has become a place where all you have to do is change your clothes, and you can be anyone or anything. It’s an amazing concept, but one that eventually develops into something greater than fashion – style.
You see, when you find the confidence to be exactly who you are, and embrace that through fashion, you no longer have to fake it. All you need is confidence to pull off an outfit. The same applies to the development of your own style. So think about it. Who are you, and what does your style say about you?
