Fifty Shades of Blue – The Guide to Denim

From chambre to acid wash, every type of denim is wonderful in context. I, myself, am guilty of owning two chambre shirts, three denim dresses, and an unmentionable number of blue jeans. But even the best-tailored jeans can go wrong with a denim clash. So here is a brief rundown of how to wear your denim well….

Dark Wash Jeans

Usually the classiest, dark wash skinnies are perfect for those loose fitted tank tops to dress up a night out. I like to pair boot cut/flared jeans with a tighter top and my skinnies with a looser top. This helps to cancel out the other in looking too frumpy or too slutty. Also, dark denim goes great with grays and browns. You can never go wrong by mixing the basic neutral colors for an earthy inspired outfit.

Light Wash Jeans

The light wash jeans are the more trendy of the two. Fitted with a T-shirt, they can be perfect for a day out shopping or just a casual outing. And boy friend jeans with a blazer is a must. You have to be more careful with light washed denim though. There is a fine line between staring in a Levi’s Go Forth commercial and rockin’ the mom jeans. I try to steer clear of the lighter end of the spectrum – it also helps if you try avoiding mini vans.

Chambre

The hardest to wear of them all. It’s difficult to match blue denim with blue denim, even if they are completely different washes. You often end up looking like you walked straight out of the ’90s. To stay on the safe side, I try not to match my denims at all. But the easy way to avoid this iconic clash is to match it will colored denim. When it comes to colored denim, the brighter the better. And according to my fall predictions, they are going to come in handy a lot this winter season. So find a good fitted pair of colored denim and buy them in every color. If you regret your purchase, send them to me.

Remember:

Everyone is shaped differently. Just because someone loves one brand on jeans doesn’t mean they are great for you. It doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with you, it just means you’re different. So keep searching…. Someday you’ll find your blue jeans soul mate.
